The Sea of Galilee

Did you know that approximately 75% of the Gospels takes place within sight of the Sea of Galilee?

The Sea of Galilee is also known as Lake Tiberias, Lake Kinnerit, and Lake Gennesaret. The lake is the largest natural lake in the Middle East and is roughly harp shaped. It is 12 1/2 miles long and 7 1/2 miles wide at its greatest breadth, and is about 144 feet deep. The shore of the lake is 680 feet below sea level! This causes a warm climate around the lake. However, cold air rushing down from the surrounding mountains can produce sudden storms (see Luke 8:22-24).

The Jordan River runs right through the Sea of Galilee, in on the North and out on the South.

There are several kinds of fish in the lake but only two are worth mentioning; tilapia (called St. Peter’s fish) which are caught by net (see John 21:6), and biny which are caught with a hook (see Matt. 17: 24-27).

In future posts I will explore sites around Galilee as well as elsewhere around the Holyland. To view them just click on “next post” below.

  1. Fascinating and the ‘St Peter’s’ fish is served in local restaurants here too, not to be missed!

    • I was in Israel on October 7th when the war was started by Hamas. The total barbarism perpetrated by Hamas who were joined by mobs of Gazan civilian men is beyond description. Only a fraction has been reported in the western media. No country on earth would not retaliate in a big way. That said I do feel for the innocent civilians who are being used as human shields and killed in the crossfire. The best place to read about what happened and is happening now is at https://www.timesofisrael.com/ a free online newspaper.
What actually took place on October 7th is so evil and is beyond what any of us could even imagine. What I’ve read I do not want to repeat as it is too offensive to decent sensibilities. It is beyond even what the Nazi’s did in WWII.
The Palestinians are not the descendants of the Philistines. They are a mix of those people who immigrated into the vacant land after the Romans deported as slaves the Jews after the 70 AD revolt. And the Arabs who invaded the land in 640 AD. Also note, there never has been an independent State of Palestine. The region has always been ruled by someone else.
I personally know good and decent people on both sides. And it is for them that my heart goes out. Even those who are not directly involved in the conflict are being hurt emotionally and financially by the war.
The Palestinians have thus been in the land a very long time and most want to stay, it is their home. Besides, the other Arab countries do not want them. The only real solution for lasting peace is a two state solution. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see it happening with the current administrations in both Israel and the West Bank Palestinian Authority.
Please ask further questions. Especially if I didn’t answer you properly.
