Mount of Beatitudes

The traditional site for the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is a good place to commemorate the most famous sermon ever given. The sermon certainly took place somewhere close to here. The Mount of Beatitudes is marked by a church set in a tranquil garden and is a good setting to review the sermon and ponder its meaning.

The church itself was built in 1937 by Mussolini. There used to be a commemorative plaque by the front door, but it has been removed. An interesting sideline – notice the machine-gun pillbox looking windows. Otherwise, the church is very attractive.

The hill location has a splendid view of the nearby Sea of Galilee.

The Sermon on the Mount included many teachings of the new gospel. Including the beautiful beatitudes or blessed:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.”

“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

“Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.”

“Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” Matthew 5:3-12.

Among other wonderful teaching in the sermon are the following: the new gospel replaces the law of Moses, control your anger, be obliging, don’t swear, the Lord’s Prayer, seek righteousness over riches, be forgiving, and God will bless those who ask (Matthew 5-7).
