Native born and raised Israelis are commonly identified as a “sabra.” This refers to the Hebrew name for the prickly pear cactus and it’s fruit. The reference meaning is the prickly pear, sabra, has thick skin and is thorny on the outside, but it is sweet and tender on the inside. If you visit Israel for a short stay you may experience only the thorns. However, if you are fortunate enough to have an extended stay, you may be lucky to experience the sweet real person. That was my experience from living in Jerusalem for two years while attending graduate school.
